Which is the brightest star in the sky?

When it comes to science, most people are easily confused.  So it’s no surprise that most people get this answer wrong and assume it’s the North Star.

The scientific name for the North Star is Polaris or Pole Star.  It’s called that because it’s very close to the North Pole.

It’s the brightest star in the constellation Ursa Minor, but it’s definitely not the brightest star in the sky.

The brightest star is Sirius, which is much brighter than Polaris.

To find Sirius, look for the constellation of Orion (this is best done during the winter in the northern hemisphere).

Follow the three stars of Orion’s belt to the southeast and you will find the brightest star in the sky.
