The first heart transplant

On 3rd December 1967, a pioneering South African heart surgeon Christiaan Barnard made history in performing the first heart transplant.

At Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, he transplanted the heart of a road traffic victim into 59 year old Louis Washkansky, who had an incurable heart disease.
