First streaker at a rugby match

The first recorded streaker at a rugby match was an Australian man called Michael O’Brien, who streaked across the field during a special charity match to raise funds for the Paris Air Disaster Appeal between England v France game at Twickenham on 20 April 1974.

A photograph of the streak – complete with a policeman’s helmet discreetly positioned used to adorn the rugby club in Hallam Street, London W1, but has now moved to the World of Rugby museum at Twickenham stadium – the home of English rugby.

After this event, streaking became commonplace with the infamous Erika Roe setting the standard for others to follow with a streak during half time of the game between England and Australia on 2 January 1982.

Strangely, her co-streaker that day – Sarah Bennett – didn’t receive half of the publicity Miss Roe did!
