What are Constellations?

A Constellation is a group of stars that make up an imaginary pattern in the night sky.

They are sometimes named after mythological characters, animals, people and even objects.

It is a bit like the game of join the dots that we play to make up imaginary shapes with the stars. There are 88 constellations in the night sky and we can see about two thirds of them in the United Kingdom.

Some of these include Orion, Taurus, Aries, Leo, Ursa Major and Ursa Minor.
