Why are croissants the shape they are?

CroissantWhen we tuck into our warm croissants in the morning, have you ever wondered why they are shaped like a crescent, well here’s your answer.

In 1686, some Hungarian bakers were working at night when they heard Turkish invaders digging underground, on their way to the city.  The bakers alerted the people and the invaders were sent packing.

To celebrate their part in the victory, the bakers created a pastry in the shape of a crescent (the Turkish emblem) and that’s why the croissant is still crescent – shaped today.

Hands up who thought that¬†croissants were something to do with the French….
