Why are pools of water called puddles?

The word puddle comes from puddel, podel or pothel, which are all derived from the old English word ‘pudd’ which means ‘ditch’.

The amount of water is irrelevant, it’s about the hole or dent in the ground.

We can define a puddle as a pool of water big enough to step in and make your feet wet, but too small to sail a boat on.
