What is a Lunar Eclipse?

A lunar eclipse is when the Earth passes between the Sun and Moon for a short time which casts a shadow on the Moon.

Up to seven lunar eclipses can happen in any year and these can be seen anywhere on Earth where the Moon is shining in the sky.

A ‘Diamond Ring Effect’ appears just before or after an eclipse of the Sun, then the Sun’s corona  (atmosphere) can be seen around the Moon.
