Why is a pack of cards divided into different suits?

pack of cardsThis comes from the Middle Ages when playing cards first became (relatively) common. The four suits – Clubs, Diamonds, Hearts and Spades represented the four most important parts of society in those days.

Clubs represented agriculture, diamonds represented the marchant class, hearts represented the church and spades represented the military.
